Margaret Sullivan

Canberra resident with memories of Acton
Interview: Community session, April 2012

“My great grandmother Margaret Logue arrived in Sydney on the 28th March 1841 together with her husband Bryan and their two-day-old daughter Mary (Cavanagh). They were employed as shepherds for the Campbells. In 1843 their address was Murrumbidgee and they were employed at the Duntroon dairy. The Campbells granted a small parcel of land to them and they moved to ‘Canberry Farm, Acton via Queanbeyan’.

My Grandmother Catherine Corkhill was born at 1867 at Canberry farm. She married my grandfather Robert Corkhill in 1893. They lived at “Riverview”, which is now under Lake Burley Griffin. “Riverview” went from the Governor General's residence right through to the river and part of Springbank. Their address was Riverview, Westridge, via Queanbeyan.

I can remember Mrs Llewellyn's riding school, and the racecourse. My Uncle Tom Corkhill was clerk of the course. He would have led the horses out and if anyone was in any trouble he would come to their aid. We used to come across the river to Springbank to see Mrs Bates (who played the piano) and her daughters, and the Kayes lived there. I later played netball (which we called basketball) and hockey on the Acton flats.”
