Alice Macdonald

Descendent of the MacPherson family of Springbank
Interview: Audio only, February 2014

“John Macpherson and his wife Helen Watson were my great great grandparents. They settled their property 'Springbank' on the northern banks of the Molongolo River in the late 1820s, and were Canberra's first resident white landholders. Their daughter Helen Jane is believed to have been the first white child born at the then Limestone Plains. There is little recorded in past or recent Canberra histories of the significant role these courageous Scots played in the early white settlement of the region which was then known as Limestone Plains.”
