The Federal Golf Course

Babette Scougal: Memories Supplied 2014

"My mother and her best friend played golf at the original Federal Golf Course which was near the Kaye farm Springbank. They used to use part of the Acton racecourse that was down there as well, and you were amongst all of the cow pats that Jo Kaye's cows left behind. If they were playing on an afternoon I’d ride my bike from Canberra High and join them and walk around behind and sometime have the occasional hit. It was a pretty crummy course as you can imagine – sand greens and that sort of thing. When the Royal Golf Course was set up they used an old homestead as a clubhouse. The federal was not as good and attracted people with less money, and they had no clubhouse at all.”
